Is Chiropractic Effective

September 18, 1895 marks as one of the very monumental date in medical history. It is the date when Daniel D. Palmer founded chiropractic and changed the course of alternative medicine. Throughout its existence, medical experts deeply scrutinized chiropractic and have been the subject of controversy. However, when Dr. Palmer manually manipulated the spine of Harvey Lillard, a nearly deaf janitor proved the effectiveness of the treatment. The nearly deaf janitor first heard a crack on his back when he bent over.  In one study, Palmer said "there was nothing accidental about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the expected result was obtained."

How it works

Chiropractic care is built on a premise that any misaligned bones or nerve can cause interference which causes pain and discomfort. Correcting these misalignments known as “subluxations” can restore health. Regular chiropractic treatment care can correct these alignments and can restore health which only regular spinal adjustment can do. Many consider chiropractic care as ‘treating musculoskeletal injuries’.

Some known benefits of chiropractic treatment include:

Some benefits are that they can help decrease discomfort in the neck, as well as in the lower or upper back, shoulders, knees or ankles, and can even manage chronic pain or discomfort caused by a vehicle accident or sports-related injuries, for example.

Effectiveness of Chiropractic treatment for Back pain

A recent study published in The Lancet shows that back pain is the most common cause of disability globally. But, like many other forms of pain, treating it is difficult to explain. Many researchers who have studied chiropractic can’t pinpoint why chiropractic treatment for back pain is effective. What’s more important is that for many patients, it does work. However, a study that was published in April 2017 in the Journal of the American Medical Association supported this finding that spinal manipulation can modestly reduce a person’s back pain. According to Michael Schneider, an associate professor of health sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, Chiropractic focused on treating the whole person, not just the body part that hurt. His study also suggests that manipulation in the back and neck adjustments can be an effective treatment for low back pain on most people. Schneider said, “Chiropractors tend to have very high patient satisfaction rates”

The fear of spinal adjustment

Chiropractic care has proven effective in treating back, neck or shoulder pain for years. But unfortunately, many people are not comfortable with having their spinal joints manipulated. Some people are still reluctant to get an adjustment because of the fear that they will have their neck cracked during an adjustment or they might develop additional pain after treatment.  But the term "neck cracking" can be very misleading, because when a chiropractor gives an adjustment, at times, some may hear a cracking or snapping sound, but it is certainly not doing damage and there is no actual cracking involved. The joint cavities are filled with synovial fluids like oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. When the patient’s neck, for example, is “cracked” during a spinal adjustment, it’s simply the sound of compressed gas being released from the fluid as a result of the specific movement. This kind of manipulation can offer relief and increase the range of motion in the joints. Some people may feel some tenderness afterwards, especially if they have never received an alignment before, but only for a short time. Most likely, after a chiropractic adjustment the patient will feel better.

Chiropractic Training and Education

Chiropractors also known as doctors of chiropractic, typically graduate from an accredited chiropractic school. Currently, chiropractic candidates are not required to have a bachelor's degree before entering chiropractic school. The chiropractic course requires four years, but some programs vary in length. According to the BLS, the focus of the coursework, like many other health careers, entails courses in the sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biology, biochemistry, and pathology. In addition to classroom requirements, lab and clinical training are required components of the chiropractic education.  Licensure is required on a national level and is obtained by passing a four-part test by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. As with most health careers, continuing medical education (CME) is required to keep licensure current. Some state boards require additional testing, but most recognize the national test.

Evidence-based therapy

It’s important that chiropractors restrict their therapies to those that are based on evidence, just like any health care profession. The evidence base of chiropractic is constantly evolving, as researchers undertake new studies on the effects of different therapies. In the early 1990s, there was very limited evidence for chiropractic treatment for headache and migraine at Macquarie University. Now, studies have shown that chiropractic can alleviate headaches, migraines and other conditions. Today chiropractic care is very effective in alleviating neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
